Layers of Blooms

The Knockout roses are blooming their heads off.  I've had a few other roses starting to bloom, but not all yet.

Here, Knockout in the back with Carefree Celebration in the front.

But my favorite part of what's blooming is not the roses (gasp!).  It's the layers of blooms.

This is a sign of my garden maturing, and of my maturing as a gardener.

The spaces that are bare really stand out, and I'm eager to remedy those.

This is a glorious time in my garden.

In addition to Garden Bloggers Bloom Day, hosted by May Dreams Gardens, I am also linking to Cottage Flora Thursdays, hosted by Fishtail Cottage.  Check them both out.  There will be a lot of blooms on display this month!

  4. All your blooms look beautiful! I am looking forward to my roses blooming. As of now, they are beginning to bud...here on the east coast. Your roses have such vividly colored blooms.

  5. Your garden looks wonderful, I love the profusion of blooms in so many shapes, colors and sizes. I don't usually worry about empty spaces - by the end of the summer everything will grow so much it will all look like a jungle!

  6. Greggo - I haven't tried the drift roses yet, but do have flower carpet roses, and love them. They haven't started blooming for me yet this year. Thanks for commenting.

Gardening Blog - What a sweet compliment! Thank you.

Tracie - Thanks for coming by. I look forward to posting more blooms ext week.

Sage Butterfly - I think May is the month for roses in most parts of the country. We are little early here, April is always our big month for rose blooms.

Masha - You're right. I shouldn't worry - I know how fast things grow. Still, we are always striving for perfection, aren't we?

Your layering of flowers and roses is most effective. I have a few knockout roses- I hope mine look half as nice as yours this June when spring settles in.

  10. GWGT - yes, every day is glorious, though a bit windy. Spring is definitely here - almost summer!

Cher - My pruning time is in February. I hope you have beautiful blooms next month.

Jennifer - Yours will look great. Knockouts are really a good rose.

  12. Holley, I love the look of your garden! Very beautiful and romantic! The first picture reminds me of a Monet painting and somehow also of his garden in Giverny. You did a wonderful job in your garden by planting things so densely that they appear to melt seamlessly into each other. I love the "no empty dirt spots" policy :-)!

  14. Thanks for the warm welcome to Texas. My garden is in the beginning stages, very unlike yours--which is lovely! I'm looking forward to learning how to garden here and what works best in the heat and clay. It seems the knockout roses are very popular here. I think I'm going to plant those next. Take care, and thanks again for stopping by my blog. --Mary Gnome

  15. Redneck Rosarian - I never know how my color combinations are going to play out. But, like nature, they all seem to play together fairly well.

Christina - It took years for me to plant things with 'no dirt spots'. I'm trying now to fill in every spot - I've found I love the look.

Donna - I hope you have roses soon, too. They are true beauties in the garden.

  16. Mary - You have the challenges down - heat and clay. :) Knockouts are a very easy-care rose here. And if you like scent - teas, noisettes, and chinas are some old garden rose classes that also do well. Have fun designing and filling in your garden!

  20. Kelli - I like purple and red together, too! Actually, I love purple, so I pretty much would pair it with anything! :)

  21. Holley, you should be proud of yourself! What beautiful combinations--if my garden had "taken" like that and begun to fill in and blend together with that layered effect, I would be jumping up and down. (And maybe squealing.) Mine is still a year or two away from that, but oh, how nice to enjoy yours in the meantime!

  22. Stacy - I was amazed what the addition of a few bulbs and groundcovers this past fall did to help fill it out. I bet yours will be there before you know it - I'm always amazed how fast plants grow. Thanks for your sweet comments.
