Winning

I learned in sales to have a 'win' every day.  Something that makes you feel good.  Sometimes, it's achieving a goal.  Sometimes it's just working toward that goal.  Sometimes a hug from a child, a kind word from your spouse, or a smile from a stranger is all it takes to have a 'win' that day.

Gardeners have a 'win' when we find a bloom, a bee, or a butterfly in our gardens.  Or when someone compliments our garden.  Or when we have completed a new bed, found a new plant for our garden, or even just pulled a weed that day.

Have you ever thought about pulling weeds as a 'win'?

That's why I was so excited when Heather at What's Blooming This Week? announced that I was the winner of her CobraHead tool giveaway!  Wahoo!  And I've been winning at getting weeds out of the garden ever since it arrived in my mailbox!

Do you know how hard it is to hold a camera in the 'wrong' hand, and take a picture while weeding?

I like this tool the best for digging down deep beside a deep-rooted weed in order to get the entire root out.  Do you know how long I've been trying to completely dig up some of these weeds?  Leave any portion of the root and they spring back up again.  It's also going to be great at cultivating the soil when I get ready to plant my vegetable garden.

Thanks, Heather!  With my new tool, I can now have a 'win' every day!

  1. Hi Holley, congratulations on your win of the cobra head tool! I have never seen or even heard of this tool before your post. Since weeding is a never ending battle in my garden I am always interested in good weeding tools, that help me to get the whole root of the weed out of the ground.

    1. I was impressed that it was small enough to dig right next to the weed, but curved in such a way it could dig quite deep, without disturbing anything next to it.

    1. I don't mind it, either. I can't imagine being a gardener and actually hating it - half my time in the garden is spent weeding!

  4. That tool looks like a real winner and congratulations on your winning! I think I will look for the cobrahead, although I had pretty much solved my weed problem by applying heavy layers of compost and mulch. However, I have a couple of beds where the mulch was removed (not by me but that's a long story!) and the weeds are back.

    1. I'm so impressed by you solving your weed problem! I lay my mulch too thin, I think. Then the cats and dogs and wind move it around. I have never even imagined not having weeds in my garden! What a wonderful dream!

  8. Congratulations on the big win! That looks like quite the handy little tool. I bet it gets deep down into the soil with a simple swing and then lifts the weeds up easily.

    1. It's much easier with two hands - one to dig under and one to pull up. I looked very uncoordinated trying to take a picture while working the weeding tool. I really couldn't do both at once! Guess I need to work on chewing gum and walking at the same time!

  9. Had to snicker at you visualizing you weeding with one hand and taking a picture with the other hand. Can't help but wonder what the neighbors thought you were doing! --Mizz Chairman of the Garden

  11. I like weeding, too - except for the bindweed that mysteriously appeared in my garden a few years ago. Will have to check out your tool the next time I'm at the nursery.

    1. Oh, good luck with that. Thankfully, I don't have that in my garden, and I hope it never mysteriously appears. I've heard nothing but bad about that weed!

  12. I have one of those that I got from May Dreams Garden awhile back. It's a nice tool for weeding or just loosening the dirt in my raised beds before planting seeds.

  15. Congrats Holley...it is my favorite tool so much so I have the hand tool and then I have the cobra head on a long how handle to do even more...

    1. I looked at the website and saw the long handled one. It looks very useful! That is a great testimonial for you to say it's your favorite tool!

  16. Holleygarden -- I keep thinking about this tool. It needs a long 5 or 6 foot handle instead of being a hand tool. A hand tool is hard on your knees and your back. I'm getting too old for that nonsense.

    1. Well, you'll be glad to know they also make this tool attached to a long handle! Check it out at their website!
