First Monday on Sunday

The weather here has been perfect.  Sunny, warm, not too hot.  Beautiful.  But I have not been in the garden.  Instead, we decided to go to First Monday Trade Days in Canton.

Treasures await behind these gates!

First Monday has evolved over its 150 year history.  New items, homemade items, and used items of all kinds are now offered for sale.   You can find clothing, furniture, tools, junk, jewelry, antiques, collectables, garden decor and even - plants!!!!  Yes!

I have purchased several different types of plants here over the years.  Most of the time (I ask a lot of questions), the plant vendors are wholesalers that offer plants at good prices.  The majority of the plants here are offered for around 1/2 the price that I've seen at box box stores.  I've never had a problem (yet) with any plant I've purchased there.  Still, "Buyer Beware" applies to anything purchased at Canton's Trade Days.

We walked for about 3 hours - a short day for most Trade Days visitors.  Trade Days covers more than 100 acres of land, and has about 6,000 vendors.  If you want it, they probably have it - somewhere!

Yes, that's my cart!  And yes, I have a cart just for going to Canton's Trade Days!

In addition to plants, I also purchased some items for my home, a few things for the pets, and stocked up on goatskin gloves (my favorite kind of gardening gloves).  We decided to go home early just because the cart was full!

I wish I had worn a pedometer.  With miles and miles of rows and aisles, you can seemingly walk forever and never see it all.  I'm joining Carolyn at This Grandmother's Garden for her Walk in the Gardens Challenge.

  1. 100 acres! That is just crazy. A nice little work out while shopping is always, good, though.

    1. Yes, it's big and wonderful! Makes you feel less guilty about all that junk food thinking you're walking it off! :O

  2. So jealous I love canton! Last time I hit all the garage sales on the highway. Not that crazy about how crowded it gets but that's just how it is. Also went to dog town...Don't go there unless you want a rabbit. :-)

    1. It can get very, very crowded! It was nice today - probably because it was Sunday instead of Saturday! I never go to the dog town part, but it's my daughter's favorite area!

  3. Wish you had a pedometer, too. Would have been fun to know how many miles you walked in three hours. The cart was a smart idea and six thousand vendors boggles the mind. We've had some nice weather here, too. As high as 86 but tonight it's going down to 38. Still, the cypress trees have started to bud out properly this year. Last year, they waited so long we thought they had died during the winter.

    1. Oh, 86 sounds like good gardening weather! Things are not holding back anymore here - everything is leafed out! The gardening season has begun!

    1. I am always amazed at what all is offered there. What I like is that men like to go shopping there, too - they're plenty of 'men stuff' there to keep them happy!

  5. Nice haul you have there! I'm very jealous as I spent the weekend inside looking out at a snowy landscape. We've gotten more snow this weekend than any other weekend this winter. Oh well, soon it will all melt! That does look like a very fun event! I hope you'll tell us more about your new purchases!

    1. I can't even imagine snow - I've started wearing shorts and sleeveless shirts on some days! I hope spring gets to you soon!

  6. Hi Holley, sounds like a fun event! I wish we had something similar here in San Diego. What plants did you get, by the way?

    1. I purchased 2 each of: bougainvillea, Lady Banks rose, Bird of Paradise, and got a free petunia. As I was leaving, I saw a man with a camellia - wish I had seen that vendor!

  7. That seems like a huge event; my head would start whirling in such a big place with so many things to buy - I will be completely lost. 3 hours not enough; seems like 30 days would be required for an 100 acre place. Shall we get to see your plants that you bought :-)?

    1. People do get lost, and no, 3 hours is not enough. I wanted to go by the gloves and plant vendor, and knew where they were located. The rest of the time we just browsed. There is no way we could have seen everything! In fact, all the years we have gone, I've never seen the entire thing! I'm certain I'll be doing some posts on my new plants, and I'll remember to let you know which ones came from here!

    1. I hope one day you'll get to come. Spring and fall are best just because of the weather, but anytime is a great time to find a bargain or two! ;)

Have a great week - love your flowers.

  11. 100 acres, 6000 visitors? Wow! This must be very interesting place! You did your shopping in 3 hours? You must have bought a lot of plants!

    1. Not 6000 visitors - 6000 sellers. They estimate between 200,000 and 500,000 visitors over these 3 or 4 day weekends! It really is a sight to see!

I'm headed to the Philadelphia Flower Show on Friday. There will be lots of inspiration plantings on display there.

  15. I love that we live so much closer now. Been a couple of times and have found some great rusty bits for the loft. So much nicer to go now that it is not 112 degrees.

    1. There's always something enticing to get there! I love that there's something for everyone - and yes, I try not to go when it's 112 degrees, but I have to admit to doing that a time or two in the past!

    1. I've never been on a Thursday! I saw those Japanese maples, but didn't see the price - and by that time my cart was already full! But, that gives me a reason to go back! :)

  17. Seems like fun, hope you got some good bargains. We do have outdoor markets in Summer but our typical weather bringing four seasons in one day often has us running for the shops.

    1. This used to be all outdoors, but now it's about 1/2 covered. Makes it so much cooler in summer! Still, I like the old part outdoors the best!

  18. Love these kinds of outdoor events! My girlfriend and I go to Shipshewana (Indiana) Flea Market and Auction every summer. It's huge. A pedometer would be interesting! We too walk row after row after row. Looks like you got a nice cart-full!

  19. Goatskin gardening gloves? What are those like??? I feel like I'm on the eternal search for just the right gloves--the kind you don't take off as soon as you start digging because they're in the way. Looks like an amazing place, Holley--nice to find a place for "bargain" plants that you can also more or less trust!

    1. I love my goatskin gardening gloves. They're fairly thick, so they hold up to hard work pretty well, but are still thin enough to weed and such with them on. I've tried all kinds of gloves, and these are my favorite kind. But, I think every gardener has a different favorite!

    1. Bargains galore here - and on Sunday afternoons, you can sometimes get things even cheaper because the vendors don't want to pack it up and take it back home!
