The Dream Sequence

Every time I saw a picture of a rose covered arbor, I would stop.  I would stare.  I would dream.

I really, really wanted a rose covered arbor!  Actually, I wanted an entire walkway of rose covered arbors!  But an entire walkway seemed a bit unfeasible, even in my dreams.

Still, I was determined to have at least one rose covered arbor.  Somewhere!  Surely I could figure out where to put just one!  So, I began to plan.

And a couple of years ago, I received an arbor as a present.  (Thanks, honey!)  My plans were big.  Make that, my plans were BIG!  Too big.  Way too big.  Too labor intensive.  And too expensive.

I just hate budgets!  :(

So, the arbor lay in pieces in the grass.  Just a pile of rusting metal.  Not at all the beauty I had envisioned.

I needed a new plan.  After all, I already had the arbor!

As a bonus, I learned how to pour concrete footings!

And this week it happened.  Ta-dah!  The arbor has been set up.  At last!

One day it will be covered in roses.  And when you go through it, you will see the gazebo.  Which will also be covered in roses.

Yes, I'm still dreaming, but at least one part of the sequence has been achieved.

(And if you're wondering, no, the catenary bed is still not finished!  Yes, I'm slow.  I'm a dreamer!)

  1. I am a big fan of slow dreams. Some may call mine procrastination, I just call it taking my time to do it right. lol. I don't know what I'd do if I wasn't trying to dream of something else/new. Nice job on the arbor and footings. Keeping dreaming.

  5. Dreams do come true! Some dreams come true almost immediately and others can take years.

Your arbor is beautiful and will even be more so covered in roses. Enjoy the process and before you know it your dreams will be reality.

  6. Budgets are such party poopers. Mr. Holleygarden, on the other hand, sounds like just the right kind of party enabler. What a gorgeous arbor! I'll bet your dreams are just as gorgeous--you've certainly made a mighty fine start. I can just picture the gazebo covered with climbing roses, a few petals drifting in the wind...

    1. It is big. Almost too big for the space it is in now. (Not too big for where I first planned it!) But I am so glad it is finally up! I see it out the window every morning, and am so pleased!

  8. Oh but what a beauty it will be upon completion. Keep picturing it and you will make it happen.

  16. I'm pleased to see I'm not alone in this World! I start a lot of things simultaneously and then it takes me ages to carry those jobs out! Your arbor looks great! I had a rectangular gazebo (made on my order by my dad! - so it was very budget friendly) on my previous garden: something like 3x4,5 mt and 2,5mt tall. I planted 6 big roses on that, one for each pillar and they covered everything in only 2 years. I have two important things to suggest you: don't plant too much thing on your arbor, it will be covered anyway AND choose a prickless rose for your eyes's sake! ;)

    1. I hadn't thought about my eyes! But, you're right - thorns can be very dangerous. Unfortunately, I fell in love with the blooms of New Dawn rose, and purchased two - one for the gazebo and one for the arbor. New Dawn is very thorny. I may eventually regret that decision!

  17. I find those that are dreamers a)are never finished, but b) even though they always tell you 'oh its not done' they nearly always have these wonderful gardens, those that our conscious didn't mess up, because our subconscious spent so much time planning in the background.

  18. Holley, you're not alone. I'm a slow dreamer, too. Can't wait to see the roses on the arbor. I think often of your catenary and wonder if I can incorporate a similar concept in my garden.

I too dream of an archway covered in roses but am battling to find a sunny spot to put it. Maybe in my next garden ...

    1. You're right that getting the arbor up (and deciding where to put it) took the longest! I just have a few tweaks now (removing more grass, putting in a pathway, etc.) and one day I will be posting an 'after' picture! Perhaps an archway covered in something shade loving - like a climbing hydrangea - would be a good substitute to dream about.

I love vines, and when we were getting our fence built, Mr. Red House had them build me an arbor over one of the gates as a present for me. Arbors are such great gifts!! Much better than jewelry... (only a gardener would say that!)
