Mulch Better!

You may be getting tired of seeing my mulching progress.  But, I am so thrilled to have some of these beds reclaimed!

Yes, believe it or not, there's a rose in there!

This is a New Dawn rose by the gazebo (to match the New Dawn by the arbor).  It was planted this spring with the best of intentions.  But, you know the old saying, "The road to hell is paved with good intentions."  :(

So, although I had the best of intentions, things got in the way, as they so often do, and I didn't get around to getting the area around this rose edged and mulched until now.  Poor rose!  I bet it did think it had gone to a really bad place!

But now that my good intentions have turned into action, I bet it will only take a year or two for my rose to be looking quite heavenly in its little home by the gazebo.  Grow, rose, grow!

  1. I'm sure your 'New Dawn' is breathing easier now! I have one on an arbor and just love those pretty pink flowers. Have you used the landscape edging before? Does it keep the weeds at bay? I bought some to try to contain my aggressive ajuga. I hope it works!

    1. I wish I could tell you that this edging is wonderful for keeping weeds at bay, but here the Bermuda grass can grow under anything. Ajuga, though, it would probably keep contained. Just dig a little trench and pound it in deep enough for the roots to not go under. Good luck!

  2. I'm sure it will be a beauty in no time at all ... just like all your other roses!

  3. Grow Rose Grow..... I like that! Not sure why you put in two roses of the same kind..... I would love to have a whole space to put in some different types from the ones that I have. Mulch.... need to put that on my October list and perhaps next summer will be less weedy. On we go... the garden loves us.

    1. I have so many different types of roses, I thought a coordinated look might be more soothing on the eyes. At least, that's the hope! :)

  4. You are making up for everything. Sweet baby probably thinks it has a new home. Oh that's right it does. :) Slow down girl or you're going to hurt yourself.

  5. Well, when you tell your roses to grow down there in CA they actually listen! I really miss the long growing season down there. Good job weeding that awful grass. Ugh. I need to go do some of that myself.

    1. I'm in Texas, but we have a long growing season too. And yes, it really helps - especially with roses!

  6. That rose is breathing a sigh of relief! It is probably much happier now and it looks great. So do your beds below. Mulch is a gardeners friend!

    1. So true! What would we do without mulch!!! I can't imagine gardening without it! (Or cardboard!)

  7. Your command is its wish, I am sure. I don't know how anyone does not garden with mulch.

    1. I don't either. Mulch is the gardener's best weapon!

  8. Oh, I'd hate for you to see how many 'good intention' jobs have been left undone around here, lol! There's always so much work to do, isn't there? But what a good feeling to have this crossed off your 'to-do' list.

    1. Oh, it does feel good to have this crossed off. It's been on the list for months! You'd think I would have gotten around to it by now, but somehow other things seemed more important at the time!

  9. Holley, this rose New Dawn is very hardy and resistant to all weeds!

    1. I'm happy to hear that! I've heard it's a tough rose - that's good!

  10. Mulch is great but you could so underplant with something like nepeta or lavender!

    1. Maybe once the weeds die off, I'll under underplant with something. Nepeta or lavender sounds beautiful. Thanks for the suggestion!

  11. I wish you had done some of this heavy work back in the Spring. It's too hot to be out there now! Drink plenty of fluids and don't get over-heated.

    1. I do drink a lot, and move slowly, and only work in the mornings, so I'm being careful not to get overheated. I wish I would have gotten around to it this Spring, too. But I was busy doing other things! I feel like it can't wait until fall, either. So, I'm left with working in the heat!

  12. That rose looks like one of mine that I am still trying to reclaim from tall grass...been working on the meadow and reclaiming it from an invasive weed so no other weeding happening.

    1. It's hard to reclaim something once the weeds have claimed it! And a meadow, it seems, would be the hardest because only hand picking would work. Good luck!
