I Did It!

I started my Master Gardening classes this past week!  After three years of hemming and hawing, contemplating and excuse-making, I finally decided to jump in and do it.  And I'm so glad I did!

I've already met so many wonderful gardeners.  Everyone in my class has a unique background, reason for joining, and interest (everything from from foraging to vegetable gardening to landscaping).

The class lecture was engrossing, and I have homework already.

Homework!  :O

But it's o.k.  It's homework in a subject I'm anxious to learn about.  And we were promised field trips, and hands-on learning, too!

One busy bee!

Never thought I'd be happy to go back to school, but I've been dancing around for days!

Yippee, Whoopee and Woohoo!

  2. I'm impressed! You will learn so much, and you will also have a great deal of validation that you know so much already. Now get cracking, no TV and early to bed tonight . . . it's a school night.

  4. That's fabulous! I plan to become a Master Gardener one day, when my schedule will permit. There is so much to learn, and I think getting to know other serious gardeners would be the best part of all. Good luck on your studies!

  6. Good for you! I considered it but decided it was more than I wanted to do. I am taking a class though starting on Wednesday - watercolors!

By the way the pavonia has shown up but not very big shoots. Does this mean it will be bigger next year?

    1. They should be. Mine do grow back, not only from seedlings, but from the stalks from the year before. After a few years, they are quite old and large, so I pull them, leaving the smaller ones that have seeded. I hope in your colder weather, they act the same for you.

  12. I called our county services a couple of years ago. The classes aren't offered here. As long as I'm working I can't attend any of the classes in other counties. Keep us updated on your classes.

    1. Sue Ellen, our county agent said he fought having the classes offered for several years. But now he's glad he finally lost! They think it's going to be more work, but in the end, it's actually very helpful to them. Maybe you and some others could keep pressuring them to offer it. Good luck.

  21. Great you are enjoying the masterclasses in gardening, it is fun to meet other gardeners with the same interest. About 15 years ago I went back to school for 'Garden Architecture', I suppose it is about the same as your MG here in Europe. In the meantime I make designs for other people's gardens and is very satisfying.
Wish you a lot of success!

  24. Congratulations, Holley! You are going to be a wonderful addition to the program. I have been a Master Gardener for over six years now and have loved it. I have learned so much (and still have much to learn!). And I have met a wonderful group of like minded gardeners.

  28. How fun! Three years ago I took the classes to become a certified Master Naturalist. There is not a day that goes by that I regret the time I spent studying nature and now giving back to the public. You will love becoming a Master Gardener!

  29. My gardening neighbor wants to take the MG classes together. I can't commit as I still have kiddos at home. I volunteer for school and girl scout activities and don't have time (yet) to volunteer for MG activities.

    Some day ....

  30. Good for you. I have wanted to do this but the classes are held in an unsafe area at night and I refuse to go...I have requested they find a better spot but they won't...

  31. Oh, there will be plenty of hands on learning, you have hours and hours to volunteer back... and remember there will be a test at the end to see how much you have learned. Great program.... next bag worm cacoon you find - take it to class - perhaps extra points, LOL.

  32. It's not the classes that stop me. It's the number of volunteer hours required afterwards, much of it phone work. I hate phone work.
