Walk to the Big Pond

How about a walk to the big pond?  Want to see what's there?  Let's join Carolyn at This Grandmother's Garden and her Walk in the Gardens challenge.

Looky, looky!  There's water in the pond!

This area is totally neglected by me, but in the future I plan to place some plants here and there, and make it a real destination place.  At least, that's the dream.  A girl can dream, can't she?

Wahoo!  It's almost full!

Do you remember last June when this pond dried up?  Thanks to the rains we've received over the past few months, it's almost full again.  Hooray!

This pond completely dried up last summer.

My favorite memory of this pond is playing country-style ice hockey on it in December 1983.  What is country-style ice hockey?  The puck is a rock and the hockey stick is a real wood stick picked up off the ground.  Have you ever played it before?

It's muddy, and there are no fish, but it looks great to me!

According to Wikipedia, in December 1983, at Dallas-Fort Worth Airport (the National Weather Service gets its readings from there), it was 32 degree F (freezing) or below for over 12 days straight.  In fact, snow that fell in mid-December in north Texas didn't melt until January, 1984.

I remember that cold spell.  I also remember that our water lines burst.

Today, Punxsutawney Phil predicted six more weeks of winter.  Well, no disrespect to the famous groundhog, but I hope the nice, warm weather we've been getting this year will continue.  And that the rains do, too.  We could use a little more.

  2. That's quite a bit of land, nice to see the water back in the pond. I had a feeling there would be more winter on its way. By the way, Groundhog Day is a great film!

    1. I have been thrilled to see the pond fill back up. I'm so hoping this summer we won't have another drought, even for just a short time. And I love the film Groundhog Day! I watch it at least once a year. :)

  3. Wish I had room for a pond. I have to make do with a small water feature instead. Hope your dream comes true.

    1. I'll have to finish all the gardens by the house, first, but I hope one day I'll get to that dream.

  4. It looks so peaceful! It must be wonderful to have enough property for a pond. I have always dreamed of having a pond, but in our small suburban back yard that will never happen so my water feature is a birdbath for the birds!

    1. I think any water feature, big or small, is wonderful to have. I know the birds appreciate your birdbath!

    1. I agree. Water is wonderful for the wildlife as well as for the gardener. Mentally, it's just a wonderful sight, no matter how big the water feature.

    1. That's the truth! It was rare for this pond to go completely dry, and worrisome, too. I'm so happy it's filling back up.

  7. That's such a good sign to have that pond full at the start of a new growing season. Let's hope your drought is finished and gone in 2012.

    1. I do hope the drought is history. It's encouraging that we've been getting winter rains. Last year the drought started in October, getting hardly any rain all fall, winter, spring, or summer. I hope our luck continues, and the pond stays full.

    1. That's my hope, for sure. I don't think the plants could take another stressful year like last one!

  9. Up until a week ago the weather in the UK had been mild for the time of year but an icy blast from Siberia has hit us and it has turned very cold and frosty. I do hope Mr. Groundhog is wrong. We just watched the Groundhog Day ceremony on the internet. I did love how the Groundhog seemed to love the attention of the audience, very cute.

    1. That Siberian blast does not sound good. I hope everything makes it through the cold front unscathed.

    1. Glad you're having fun with it! Yes, the pond does draw a bit of wildlife, and we really worried about them when it went dry last summer. I'm not the only one that's happy to see it filling up!

    1. It will be good to hear the frogs there again. And see the birds and other wildlife using the pond again, too.
