That's What It's All About!

Jump up, everyone, and do the Garden Pokey!

You put the grass in...
You mow the grass down...
You take the grass out...
To put some flowers all about...
You do the Garden Pokey and you turn yourself around
That's what it's all about!

Cinco de Mayo

You make a garden plan..
You change the garden plan...
You put some flowers out...
And you take a look about...
You do the Garden Pokey and you turn yourself around
That's what it's all about!

Gee Whiz

You put the trowel in...
You take the trowel out...
You put a plant in...
And you do it all again...
You do the Garden Pokey and you turn yourself around
That's what it's all about!

You take some plants out...
You put some more plant in...
You move some plants about...
And you throw the plan right out...
You do the Garden Pokey and you turn yourself around
That's what it's all about!

Ducher

You see a bloom here...
You see a butterfly there...
You see a bee in flight...
And you feel such delight...
You do the Garden Pokey and you turn yourself around
That's what it's all about!

Now you'll have that song in your head all day!  ;)  So, have I been doing the Garden Pokey?  You bet!  This week I:

New curve to the Pathway Garden

  • Mowed and string trimmed my yard, mowed my parents and my grandmother's yards.
  • Enlarged the pathway garden in one spot that had been driving me crazy for several years, and weeded out all the grass in that area.  Not a large area, but an area where the curve was just not right.
  • Planted some newly purchased plants.
  • Planted lots of bulbs.
  • Transplanted several plants.  (Impulse shopping has made me throw out the garden plan!)  I also transplanted enough plants to fill up the newly enlarged area in the pathway garden.
  • Removed some plants completely - a few Knock Outs that were in too much shade (gave them away), and a huge artemisia that I was tired of cutting back.  As much as I loved its foliage, I was glad I removed it because I then saw that it was hiding a giant armadillo hole under Mrs. Dudley Cross!  (I've written about her HERE and HERE.)  No wonder she has looked so sad lately!  I also removed Belle de Crecy.  Goodbye, Belle.  :(  She has not been happy with our hot summers and warm winters.  I don't think she liked my horrible soil, either.

Ah, yes, much better.

What will I do next week while doing the Garden Pokey?  Stay tuned and find out!  What about you?  Have you been doing the Garden Pokey lately?

  1. Wow is about all I can say, Holley! I'm sitting here exhausted after a bit of mowing and strimming (I think you call it string trimming?). Mrs Dudley Cross looks fascinating, must keep my eyes peeled for her!

    1. She's a sweet rose. Her flowers don't stay pretty as long as I would like them, but mine is not in the best spot, so I think that makes a big difference.

    1. Autumn and spring I'm busy, busy, busy. But summer's too hot to work and winter's too cold, so I need to take advantage of the weather while I can!

  3. Beautiful blooms as always. Now that song will be going through my head, shame on you! :-)

Our weather is cooler and less humid so it is much nicer to work out in. I've been pokeying around in my gardens for the last two days. Today I'm resting at my place of work.

Have a lovely weekend ~ FlowerLady

    1. The weather here has been absolutely beautiful. Just perfect gardening weather, so I'm definitely taking advantage of it. Days like that don't seem to come around too often!

  4. I'm doing the slow pokey version of the Hokey Pokey, but slowly I'm adding some fall, winter, and hopefully spring color to the yard. Your Garden Pokey made me laugh! That's what it's all about...and so much more!

    1. Slow pokey - ha! I feel I'm very slow pokey when it's a battle between me and the weeds! I think they can multiply faster than I can get them pulled!

  6. If I'm still humming this tune in my head while counting sheep in my bed tonight, there's gonna be trouble!!! :-)

    1. haha, Jane! I hate to tell you, but that tune has been rolling around in my head for days! Good luck getting it out once it's in! :O

  7. Too bad I didn't have your song to sing yesterday - singing might have stopped the cursing that accompanied my garden chores as I faced up to the fact that some plants just don't belong in my back border and ripped stuff out right and left. Today I went shopping for new plants with friends so, for the next several days, as I dig, rearrange, and plant I'll be sure to keep the spirit of the garden hokey-pokey in mind. (Maybe I should print it up on a plaque and hang it above my garden bench.)

    1. I think we all get that way in autumn. I've decided it's not our gardens, really, it's the season. Things go dormant, or start losing leaves, and it's just not as pretty as we would like. We forget how beautiful it was in summer, so every autumn we try to spruce it up a bit!

  8. Ha!!! You crack me up!! You need to sell this song or make a garden sign out of it!! I can not get over how cute it is and how much it is so true!! You have gotten so much done! My garden is done...the frost has set in! BOO! Happy dancing to you!!!

    1. Oh, no, frost! :( I started singing the Hokey Pokey (have no idea how I thought of that song) and couldn't get it out of my head for days! So, I decided to just turn it into a Garden Pokey song!

  10. Phew, you've been busy! Love the song... yes, I will be humming it all day now! I've done quite a bit this week too. Only a few bulbs left to get in now!

    1. Good luck with the bulbs. I always feel like I haven't accomplished much when I've planted bulbs, no matter how many I plant. I guess because they're under the ground, and I can't see them, so it doesn't look like I've accomplished anything!

  11. So that is what it is called. . .the garden pokey. I was planning on doing the dance today but, alas, the heavy rain won't let me in the garden. Maybe I will go plant shopping. .. now there is an idea!

  12. You've done a ton of work! I'm tired just reading about it! Your song totally reflects the whole gardening process and all of its transitions...plus, it's cute to boot. :)

    1. It's difficult to decide. I think that's why I move so many plants around - I didn't quite decide, then later on I decide it doesn't look quite right!

    1. I am happy with the extension of the curve in the pathway. It has bothered me for years - one side was curved, and the other side of the path just didn't match! It looks much better now, even without blooms.

  16. The Garden Hokey Pokey is a great way of putting it, Holley. Wow, you've been busy! The garden of 2014 should be quite a show! To answer your question, yes, I've been doing The Garden Hokey Pokey lately (almost each time I set foot out there in the garden ... lol). Enjoyed your uplifting post. :-)

    1. My goal is to try to get the garden beds as weed free as possible - at least not let them be all weeds like they are now! I think if I keep that goal in mind, maybe I can get a grip on the amount of weeds in my beds.

  17. Cute Holley...I am jealous that you can just keep on gardening...we are trying to find any little bit of time to do a bit of the enormous amount of work still to do before the snow....right now cold and rainy so no gardening :(

    1. I am just now getting to work out in the garden, Donna! The summers are too hot to do much outside, and the weeds take completely over. Autumn and spring are the two times of the year I can try to get caught up. I hope you get everything done before snow hits.

  19. I was feeling a bit overwhelmed this morning, thinking of how much there is to do in my garden as we are struggling with drought and bush fires. NOW I can't wait to tackle it. You always make me smile and look forward to doing the garden hokey pokey! Thanks Holley

    1. Roz, I would love to comment on your blog, but I can only comment if I am joined up with Google Plus, which I am not. Is there any way you can change that on your blog? I'm sorry to hear about the drought, and the fires. We suffer through drought most summers, so I know how discouraging it can be. But the fires there have been terrible. I hope you stay safe.

  21. I had a lot of fun reading this post! I do the garden pokey all the time! By the way, I have been catching up on your latest posts and just read about your mutabilis. My own mutabilis has grown rather large, and recently I was thinking how much like a tree it had become! I did not intend it to do that, but it seems to have that in its own mind.

    1. Mutabilis does love to get large! Mine had started suckering, so I think if mine had its way, it would just take over the entire earth! I am trying to trim it into a tree so it won't take up as much room!

  22. It's a good thing that regular passersby here already think I'm nuts. Seeing me Hoke and Poke out there will just confirm any suspicions. Belle Crecy didn't last a year here. Now I know it wasn't really my fault.
