May 2011 Hope Grows Day

I realize I'm a little late in posting my May Hope Grows Day hosted by Sweet Bean Gardening.  It has been an incredible month, so although I'm late, I definitely wanted to chime in for the month!

As expected, my roses put on a show:

James Galway

Julia Child

Buff Beauty

Rock & Roll

About Face

And now, their flush is complete, and I am waiting for the next round of blooms.

My bulb garden, I am sad to say, is not blooming.

But there is great anticipation in wondering what will burst from these buds!

I like them even in the bud stage.  They remind me of a fireworks show.  It will be so exciting when they explode open!

So, for June, I will continue to let you know about the bulb garden's progress.

And in addition to that, I am hoping that we will have tomatoes.  Actually, I'm not a big tomato eater.  But I want to eat something out of the garden that's not lettuce.  And the best part about tomatoes is they can be made into sauce.  I am anxious to can something this year.  It will give me such pride to see part of the harvest sitting on my pantry shelves.  So, I'm counting on the tomatoes!

And, I want to be finished mulching the beds!  Yes, I know, I know, I am WAY behind!   Should have completed this long ago.  And now I can't put it off any longer!  Just a few days of toil, sweat, sunburn and backache - and in the long run it will be well worth it!

  1. Wow, it's good to know that I wasn't the only one to face the task of mulching. Thankfully my mulch pile is gone and this week I can look froward to some other garden fun: transplanting moss and creeping thyme, finding and transplanting holly trees from the woods, and caring for the plants that I have growing.

Your roses are lovely. My knock out is setting buds. There's hope there.

  3. Glorious rose blooms, so very pretty. I am sure you will have tomatoes this year, your plants look strong and healthy. Looking forward to seeing what types of sauce you will be canning.

  4. Marcia - My mulching has just begun. I dread it, and put it off way too long! Have fun in your garden planting!

Hanni - I have no idea which bulbs those are! haha I planted so many different kinds, and all different varieties. Until they open I won't know exactly what they are!

Karen - If we can keep them watered, and the deer away from them, we will have tomatoes. That's a lot of ifs!

  5. I was just thinking the very same thing, lettuce leaves, never anything else to eat from our garden. You have made up my mind for me, tomatoes, they have to go in the greenhouse here in Scotland. However I am fed up training them up canes, I will settle for the basket ones this year.

  7. You are so ahead of me...all our garden chores have been crammed into one month so I am rushing around trying to get veggies planted up, beds weeded and mulched, new plants planted and on and on...so take a breath and know that the beds will get mulched...here's hoping we see some lovely tomatoes and bulbs in your garden in June...

  8. Alistair - Oh, you definitely need tomatoes, even if they have to go in the greenhouse. They are so versatile. Eat them, dry them, can them, make all kinds of sauces. So unlike lettuce!

Sage Butterfly - Poor little Rock & Roll is squeeze in a place not really big enough, but I just had to have a striped rose! I love to see it's variations.

Donna - wow - I never thought about having to do everything all at once like you do! I started on the mulching today, so I'm sure I'll get it done eventually. I'm like a turtle - slow by steady. You, on the other hand, have to work like a hare!

  9. Your roses are beautiful, and I hope your hopes will be fulfilled. I am hoping we will have tomatoes too - it is my first year of growing them in pots...

  12. Masha - Growing tomatoes in pots sounds like a great idea. Once you taste them, you will grow them every year!

Pam - We are way ahead of ourselves! We are about a month earlier on everything than last year. Unlike most of the country, it has been drier than normal, and hotter than normal. I hope the tomatoes produce a lot before they go dormant from the heat.

greenapples - It really does depend on the rose. I try to get ones that aren't too hard to grow. I'm not the pampering type of gardener! Of course, they love the heat and the full sun here.

  14. redgardenclogs - yes, I love the delicate coloring of Buff Beauty. It's a great old rose. My bulb garden is a surprise this year as I planted it last fall. I'm hoping it will be a success.

  15. Funny, I'm not a huge fan of fresh tomatoes either but I do like tomato sauce and soup so I grow tomatoes. You'll love the feeling of having grown your own and picking up a jar of sauce mid-winter instead of having to buy it at the store.

The roses are all beauties. My favourite is the first one. I love the tight crush of all those pink petals in a single flower.

  17. Marguerite - My family thinks I'm nuts because I love tomato-y things like sauce but not really tomatoes to eat. Glad I'm not the only one! I put up just a bit of hot sauce last year, but this year we have a lot more tomato plants, so I'm hopeful!

Jennifer - The first one is a beauty with all its petals. It is a bit deceiving, though, as the bloom is only around three inches across. I've always wished it was a big bigger, it would be a show stopper!
