Gaga

I bet you think I'm going to talk about Lady Gaga!  Ha!  No, I don't know enough about her to write anything.  The gaga I'm talking about is the kind talked about on Seinfeld, as in "I'm gaga about her, Jerry", or "he's not gaga".  (I never watched Seinfeld when it was on years ago, but now I enjoy watching the re-runs.)

You will probably only understand this post if you are a gardener.  It's about fall weeds.  For some reason, weeds in the fall really don't bother me.  Spring weeds I detest.  I try to pull them as fast as I can (which is never fast enough).  But weeding in the fall just seems heartless.  Those poor little things, destined to freeze before spreading their seed.  So, I find joy even in the weeds - as long as I know the freeze is coming.

And the freezes have come, for the last two nights, and more expected.  But, before the freezes hit, I went outside to say goodbye to the weeds, and roses.  That's when I stumbled upon 'Safrano'.

Safrano has a reputation for being a heavy bloomer, a lovely rose, and all I've ever heard is raves.  Since mine is fairly young, I've been anxiously waiting to see what all the fuss was about.  She bloomed for me a time or two, but nothing spectacular, although I noticed her blooms were getting prettier as she aged.  Still, I wasn't gaga.

Then I saw these blooms:

And for some reason, in these final blooms of the year, I finally saw what I've been hearing about.  Beautiful form, delicate coloring, lovely foliage.  And stems described as "plum".  I couldn't take my eyes off these blooms.

I'm gaga for her, Jerry.

And now I have one more reason to look forward to spring.

Safrano is an old garden tea rose, grows in zone 7 through 9, is disease resistant, fragrant, and will get from 4 to 7 feet tall.  Might make you go gaga.

  3. Holley, the blooms of your 'Safrano' look absolutely lovely! If that rose would grow in my garden I certainly would go gaga about it, too! I am learning to appreciate the beauty of the Tea roses and what 'Safrano' is in your garden is 'Georgetown Tea' in my mine. It still gives me big, beautiful, soft-pink blooms and will most likely continue to do so over the winter, whereas all my other roses will take a break.

  4. Ah, gaga, I love that term. And that rose! What a sight for my sore eyes. Around here there is nothing beautiful to gaze upon.

( I don't know anything about Lady Gaga either, it's my age showing again...you'd think I'd keep up on these trends, but alas, no.)

  5. Safrano is a really lovely, antique looking rose.

  7. I'm gaga about your roses and yard, Holley... Of course, I'm gaga about ours too. BUT-this time of year can be sorta depressing since the only thing blooming around here are our little Pansies... (Can't wait 'til spring!!)

Thanks for the cute post today.
    Hugs,
    Betsy

  8. Cat - I wish I could explain each rose's fragrance a bit better. Or have 'smell-o-vision' in our blogs! Wouldn't that be great?

Cher - I really like this color, too. And I'm usually a bright orange fan!

Christina - Oh, your Georgetown Tea sounds wonderful. I don't have that one, but it sounds like one I could go gaga over!

Karen - Some of us go gaga over roses, some of us - rocks! :)

Flower Lady - I think it's the pink on the back in contrast with the lighter front on the petals that caught my eye. I just love a rose with pretty contrast.

Mark and Gaz - I hope next year it will really be gaga-worthy!

Betsy - It's nice to find someone else that's gaga over roses! I'm looking forward to spring, too. And my winter has just begun!

  11. Curbstone Valley Farm - I may not after this week as we are supposed to have freezing temps for several nights in a row. :(

Malar - Really, I could probably go gaga over any little bloom!

  12. PlantPostings - Oh, I think it's such a pretty color, too. I can't wait to see it in full bloom next spring!

  13. Lovely. The color is hard to describe, but so delicate, like the dawn.

  14. I am so enjoying your posts in my email every so often...this rose is so creamy, reminds me of a delectable sherbet!

  15. She is a beauty! My roses are doing really well right now. Freezing temps have them a little droopy but still blooming strong.

  16. Ohhh, will keep this rose in mind. I am preparing another section in my garden just for tea rose and floribunda. Excited!

  17. Sheila - What a beautiful description. Like the dawn. I like that.

Robin - I'm so glad. And it does look delicious, doesn't it?

Tufa Girl - Mine are frozen in time. :( Glad yours are doing so well!

Dewi - Oh, that is very exciting! Sounds like a wonderful and beautiful plan!

  19. Roses aren't my first love but even I can see why you're gaga over these blooms. I love that shade of peachy pink and what a classic rose form.

  20. Funny, I did think you were posting about Gaga. I no nothing of her but her crazy attire, and same with Jerry. I never saw the show, but have seen the clips, which to me, seems like CRAZY humor. Pretty rose, so saying gaga over it is fitting, not crazy.

  21. Very nice. Roses are so great in the fall! I love their tenacity!

  22. Weeds grow like crazy here all winter, by spring time they will be all over the place.
Beautiful rose, love that color - I envy your winter blooms.

  23. Hi Holley, sorry I've neglected you something rotten. I think you know more about Lady Gaga than I and I've never, ever seen an episode of Seinfeld. Does that make me freaky? Love the rose though and glad it gave you one last show.

  24. Well, I also am not an expert on Lady Gaga, but I guess we would have to be living on another planet not to have heard of her. I agree with you Holley I also am fanatical about getting rid of the weeds in Spring, couldn't care now, well! unless, I maybe see one.

  25. Holly - I have finally got OpenID to work, so I can comment on your blog!

  26. Donna - The only bad thing about tea roses is their zone limitations!

Marguerite - The delicate coloring really got to me. I generally love bright in-your-face color, but this rose seemed so sweet.

GWGT - haha Perhaps I'll post about Lady Gaga one day! ;) I started watching Seinfeld when they were showing re-runs in a time slot when I was almost ready for bed. I found I could watch it to rewind, and it didn't make me think!

Indie - Our summers are so hot, the roses go dormant, so the fall blooms are truly special to me.

bakingbarb - Glad to know I'm not the only one with winter weeds! No one else has mentioned them - I was beginning to feel a bit inadequate!

Dave - I'm not sure if Seinfeld "translates" well. I'd never seen an episode until I started watching old re-runs. Maybe I'll like Lady Gaga in 20 years, too!

Alistair - Oh, I see the weeds, but for some reason they don't seem like a bad lot. The spring weeds, though, are a bad bunch, and will take over the world if given just 10 minutes it seems!

B-a-g - So glad you can finally comment! I know it's been frustrating for you for quite some time.

  27. I have recently noticed that the weeds are going great guns here, too, just like the roses, but unlike yours, mine probably won't be killed by our freezes - just slowed down a bit. So I need to get out there with the RU, but first need to replace my sprayer! Safrano is a beauty for sure, but I didn't choose her due to shortage of garden space and her lower petal count. I'm a sucker for fat blooms! Glad for you that she's maturing nicely. Next spring she'll probably blow you away, and you'll be double gaga!

  28. What a lovely Tea! Such a delicate colour. Here in London, my roses are still flowering, although not as prolific as a couple of months ago. Even with frost now and then and perhaps some snow for a day or two they will continue the whole winter through. I look forwrad to seeing photos of your Safrano next spring!

  29. What a gorgeous rose! I so wish I had smell-a-vision on my laptop..haha! Beautiful!!

My roses are done, but it is nice to visit and enjoy yours. This one is a delicate beauty. I can see why you are gaga over it.

  31. Sherry - Oh, double gaga is what I want to be! :) I hadn't thought about it, but you don't ever get a reprieve from weeding!

Helene - How wonderful that you roses will continue to bloom through the winter. That is a winter wonderland!

Julia - Maybe they'll invent that some day! It would really help the food advertisers!

Jennifer - It's just a waiting game now, waiting for spring!

  32. remembering plant names is such a stretch for my brain that sometimes I think botany is sending me gaga.

  33. Dog Blogger - Oh, I agree that remembering plant names can get overwhelming! I try to save my tags, but even then it's no guarantee I'll be able to find it! :O
