The Song that Never Ends

Do you know this song?

This is the song that never ends,
It just goes on an on, my friends.
Some people started singing it not knowing what it was,
And now they can't stop singing it forever just because...
(repeat)

Yes, that's the Song that Never Ends.  And you either love it or you hate it.

I realized that I was humming that song today.  And it was very, very appropriate.  Because I realized I was doing the same chore over and over and over (and over!) again.  In fact, this chore never ends!

What chore could I be talking about?  Weeding!

I would love to eradicate this weed from my garden!

If you're a gardener, you know all about weeding.  It's something that just goes on and on, my friends.  You can't stop doing it forever just because...  because if you do they'll take over!  I learned my lesson the hard way.  I thought one little weed looked so pretty, I'd keep it.  HA!  I'll never be fooled again!

If you're a gardener, you probably like weeding.  It's a mindless activity that allows your thoughts to ramble.

If you ever got in trouble as a child for daydreaming, this is for you!  You can daydream all you want, think of so many things - important things, trivial things, solutions, problems, humorous things, sad things, so many different things!  (Unless you get the Song that Never Ends stuck in your head!)  And do you get in trouble?  No!  People think "Oh, poor thing!  Out there weeding all day!".

And it's so satisfying!  So much better than housework.  So much better than a job.  So much better than a project you complete, and then you're done.  Because this never ends.  It'll always be there.  Anytime you want to daydream, just go weed the garden.  If you're lucky you'll be rewarded with a weed-free garden.  At least for a day or two.

And you'll know all the solutions to life's biggest problems.  And if you don't, well, you can think of that next time you weed.  Because this is a chore that never ends!

  1. I love your new header photo, HolleyGarden. Very pretty peek into your very pretty garden. What is the name of that weed? I remember it from up north - but not here thankfully! You have a very positive attitude toward weeding. Thanks for sharing it with us. You're right about the daydreaming.

  2. I do like weeding. Maybe because it's extremely satisfying to yank some vile weed out of the ground and know you got the taproot.

  3. I too love the new header, your garden is worth featuring it is so pretty. I let the weeds have their way during August because so many have pretty flowers. I just don't let them go to seed.

  4. I find weeding therapeutic. Trying to do catch up at the moment as it's got away from me slightly! Lovely header photo of your garden. Is the a real cat or a statue of a cat?

  5. I believe the name of this lovely (NOT) weed (er...wildflower) is whitemouth dayflower also known as narrow-leaf dayflower, Commelina erecta angustifolia. It is perennial, native to Texas (and I'm sure a bunch of other places). One site suggested letting grow with Zexmenia for a pretty yellow and blue combination. Both are certainly very drought tolerant plants and seem to thrive on our brutal heat. I actually think that might be a pretty combo, but I just can't bring myself to let it continue to live in my garden -- the dayflower, that is. Zexmenia is my friend this summer :-) Weeding is job security for the gardener, right :-)

  6. I am pretty sure I saw that weed for sale at a nursery that sells native plants here in Texas. :) I don't mind weeding and sometimes actually enjoy it when the weather is not soooo hot. Nut grass drives me crazy though.
I like your header, too. Very pretty!!

  7. That's the most positive outlook I've ever seen on weeding! Usually I'm distraught at how quickly it gets out of control. Right now my dandelions could take first prize at the fair they're so big and lush. and it feels like I just picked them yesterday.

  8. Sherry - It is a pretty weed, but so difficult to eradicate because you have to get the little bulb, too, and it always breaks off above it. :( It's a dayflower - see Toni's comment - and it gets into every little nook and cranny in my garden! I daydream that one day I will be free of it!

Bumble Lush - The weeds that can be pulled easily with that satisfying sound are my favorites. I think half of gardening is weeding!

GWGT - I think August is a tough time for most plants, except for weeds! One day my garden will be weed free (at least in my dreams!). Thanks for your sweet comment on my garden.

Janet - The weeds have been running amuck in my garden since I've been hiding inside, away from the heat. The cat is real - her name is Bear because she's like a sweet little teddy bear.

Toni - You are wrong! This is not a wildflower - it is a weed!!!! :) Any site that recommends letting this grow anywhere near the garden has never had to personally deal with it.

Amy - Shockingly, I see weeds for sale more and more! I feel for the poor unlucky gardener that buys them unaware. I enjoy the mindless activity of weeding, too. Gives the brain a bit of a break - free to plan grander visions.

  9. Marguerite - I actually like the look of dandelions, but they do multiply rapidly! And I agree - the weeds get out of control quickly! But it's so satisfying to look back and see the progress you can make in such a short time when weeding a garden.

  10. I have those same weeds here. The blue flowers are kind of pretty but bot do they spread. Ugh! I keep having to dig them out.

  11. Weeding, it's a chore that I wish I never need to do, but don't mind doing. And as you say you can let your thoughts ramble on as you do it :)

  12. Oh, I had a good giggle over this post, and now I'll have the song stuck in my head while I'm out there in Weedland trying to eradicate them all.

The worst weed we have here is Creeping Charlie, or Kennilworth Ivy or whatever name it goes by, and to make matters worse, I was GIVEN this horror by a greenhouse owner when as a rookie gardener I naively asked what would make a good groundcover in an amongst paving stones. 'Here, this plant is very tough and can take foot traffic very well, in fact, heh, heh, I'll give you some for FREE!' I thought the guy was so nice, and took it home and carefully nurtured it and now this weed is taking over our lawn (Huge patches of it!) and spreading itself out into the hayfield and under the trees, full sun or full shade doesn't bother it in the least. I don't think we'll ever be rid of it, even smothering it with black plastic is no use. It is just a menace. (And you don't want to know what I think of the 'nice' guy who gave it to me, grrrrrrr!)

Sorry, went off on a tangent there....anyway, yes, I hear you about weeds and I'll be humming away this afternoon!

  13. Love the 'cat statue' in your blog header photo - really super. P.S. your roses in last post are gorgeous as usual. Kelli

  14. My Mom says that weeding is like threading beads on a string with no knot in the end. (She says that about housework, too.) But I agree--in the right frame of mind it turns into kind of a Zen thing.

I love your new header photo--so gorgeous! And it figures the cat would sit in the birdbath. :)

  15. Lona - Digging them up is right - they are very hard to get up without digging. Sorry these are also in your garden!

Mark and Gaz - And I do so love to daydream! And it looks like I'm being productive, too!

Karen - That greenhouse owner should be ashamed of himself! I can't imagine being given a weed - horrible! And, yes, that song has been running through my head for days now!

Kelli - I'm not certain I realized she was there when I took the picture! Thanks for your sweet comment.

Stacy - Your Mom is right! And weeding does seem to block out everything else for me. You're right - it's almost like I'm in a trance! Cats don't realize birds won't land there while they're waiting! Guess they figure there's always that one chance in a million!

  16. Holley, funny that you did a post about weeding today! I just came in from, guess what, a little weeding and have to say it was very satisfying. I weeded an area around a rose, because I wanted to fertilize the rose and not the weeds :-) and in a short time I saw visual improvement big time. After I had fed the rose I mulched with compost and this area of my garden looked really good after I was done! Of course, when the weeds get out of hand that is another story...

  17. Holley~~ What a great post. Except that...darn. I've got that song stuck in my head now. Maybe I should go weed. LOL Btw, I love your new header photo. Your garden is just awesome!

  18. Christina - So smart of you to weed before fertilizing. I've done it backwards before! I agree that the visual improvement is usually immediate - like making up the bed!

Grace - haha I've got it stuck in my head, too! Thanks so much for the compliment.

  19. Working in the garden is like an escape...I can get lost in the blooms, the leaves, and, yes, the weeds. Having said that, there are some weeds that seem to think my garden is their monthly vacation spot because they keep returning...ugh!

  20. Sage Butterfly - Isn't it a wonderful escape to love? I can think of nothing better than to be lost in such beauty as a garden - even with the weeds!

Weeding is like housework. It is never done. Your header photo is just great. I have always wondered what your garden looks like. Now we can see just how beautiful it is!

  22. Jennifer - Weeding is a bit like housework, except I don't mind weeding, and I dread housework! lol That area of the garden is my favorite so far because it has a lot of different plants, and they have been there long enough to have filled in.

  23. Oh, Holley! The "widow's tears"!?! (Bloom/tears dries up by noon.) The weed for me is bermuda. I have the best patch of lawn a flower bed could possibly be. It is never ending.

    ReplyDelete
  24. Oops,forgot... love the header photo. Kitty looks like s/he has a flower bonnet.

    ReplyDelete
  25. Tufa Girl - I never heard them called that! Good thing you explained, otherwise I'd think widows would be crying because they had this weed in their yard! And bermuda grass is, yes, a pain and impossible to keep out of the flower beds or vegetable beds. :(

  26. Weeding is really satisfying activity! I have keep so many weeds due to their look...but when they become invasive...i uproot all of them!

  27. Malar - I used to keep some weeds, but found out fast why they were considered weeds! I try to eradicate them all now - though sometimes it feels like I'm losing the battle!
