There for the Taking

One of my favorite things to do in the morning is walk around the garden, taking.  Taking note of the blooms, taking a few pictures, and taking joy in the beauty and life I find.  I also mentally take note of what chores need to be done, and if any plants are unhappy.

Today I found these beauties:

Dream Come True

Westerland

Carnival Glass (and friend)

Unknown, but still pretty!

This is just a small sampling of what I found on my daily walk.  There are a lot of chores I've added to my mental 'To Do' list.  Yes, the garden takes work.  Sweat.  Sometimes tears.  But what it gives back - oh, what it gives back! - is pure joy.

  2. Holley, very lovely rose blooms! My favorite photo is the one of the yellow unknown rose! I also try to take a walk through the garden every day if possible, so not always in the morning, to check on the plants and take in their beauty. And yes, beautiful gardens need work, a lot of work actually, but first of all I love being out there and "get dirty" and the joy it brings back out ways any effort I have to make. My only problem is not having as much time to garden as my little yard would like me too :-)!

  3. 'Pure joy' is definitely what our gardens give back to us.

Thank you for sharing more from your lovely gardens. I can never get enough of seeing roses.

The garden does give us so much joy and peace.

  5. 'Carnival Glass' is my favorite of the bunch but they're all outstanding! I'm curious what that creepy bug is though.

  7. You do have some beauties there and it does take a bit of work, but love too.

  8. Absolutely lovely. Do you go with coffee or tea cup in hand? Fortunately for me my eyes can take in most of the garden from the moment I rise from bed. Our bedroom looks out on the perennial beds. From the great room the expanse of windows takes in the glen garden and from my study I can see the pond garden. The walk then is to the vegetable garden. Lately been too muggy to enjoy that.

I will send you the daylily when I return from vacation. Off to Maine and cooler temps.

  9. Cher - Isn't it pretty? I so wish I knew its name!

Christina - A lot of gardeners walk around at night, some in the mornings. I just think it's important to have a time to enjoy, not always work. I worked for many years without really enjoying but since starting this blog, due to my need for pictures, I've found I really love just going out there to just find something pretty. I really appreciate my garden more now.

FlowerLady - I think roses are beautiful, too. And such hard working plants!

Lona - I've been so pleased with Westerland. It's a pretty rose, and nice shape.

Grace - I'm not sure what kind of spider that is, but I have a lot of them this year! I hope they're good ones!

GardeningBlog - And you'll soon have so much more joy as your spring arrives!

GWGT - I agree. Love is a big part of doing this every day.

Marcia - I usually go after my coffee. :) Just camera in hand. How nice to be able to see so much of your garden from the house. That must be very motivating. How wonderful to be going somewhere cool! Enjoy!

  11. Malar - I have another unknown rose that is probably my very favorite rose! Oh, how I wish I knew its name!

  12. I can't believe you have anything in this heat! I'm glad you do! My flowers are really suffering - I think I need to water them even more than once a day. My tomatoes are barely hanging on. We just returned from a week in Yellowstone - you should have seen the wildflowers - words just can't begin to describe God's beautiful handiwork. Hope to have pics up soon.
    Blessings,

Your unknown rose is very, very pretty!

  15. You are right, a garden takes a lot of work, but it gives a lot back. I also like to walk in the garden and think about the chores that need to be done. Unlike you, I then go inside the house and forget about them :). This weekend I finally tried to catch up - I am falling down!

  16. I love the way you captured the light on the "Dream Come True" roses.

  17. Oh, yes, our gardens give back! To us and to countless numbers of little creatures. I love the photo of the roses with the bug.

  18. Thank you for taking us on your morning walk through the roses! I have my coffee right next me and enjoyed the tour thoroughly!

  19. Abi - Yes, I think water is the key, but everyone has to decide how much they can do that. My tomatoes are gone. We didn't water them one day - one day! - and they died in that one day's lapse! I can only imagine how beautiful Yellowstone must be with fields of wildflowers. I look forward to seeing your pictures.

Sherry - Yes, a lot of sweat, as you well know! :) I love seeing all the little creatures, and just hope that most of them are beneficial!

Tatyana - I go out occasionally in the evening, but I'm usually so tired of the heat by them, I'd rather just stay inside! But late afternoon is the best time for me to see the hummers, which I really enjoy.

Masha - My garden chores are falling far behind, too. I only work for a short time in the morning. I try to figure out what is the most important thing for me to do, and hopefully everything else will wait until it gets cooler. (keeping my fingers crossed!)

GirlSprout - Dream Come True has been very disappointing to me in the past, but this year it's decided to bloom - in multiples! I don't know if it finally got established enough to be happy, or just loves the heat! (I think the extra watering has helped, too.)

deb - You are so right! So many creatures - probably thousands that we don't see. If you build it, they will come!

jayne - The roses give me such pleasure. I love seeing the other blooms, but the roses seem to give me a sense of satisfaction that other plants don't.

  20. Walking through the garden each day is one of my favourite pasttimes. Spotting newly blooming flowers, new growth, undiscovered insects. There's nothing more relaxing and enjoyable to me.

  21. Marguerite - I agree. And I'm so glad I've finally started enjoying my garden instead of just working in it! It really does have a lot of joy to offer.

  22. Sometimes the best photos and glimpses of the garden are in the morning :) Gorgeous blooms, the 'Unknown' yellow rose is my favourite of the lot!

  24. As much work as they are, our gardens bring us such joy. My daily garden walks have been a journey that began when I was just a boy. Could not imagine not taking time in the garden each day to admire all it holds....

  25. Chris - I loved the story of your dad and his garden walks, and I think that's something most gardeners do. It's satisfying to see such beauty come from a little work.
