I've Missed You!

All winter long I dreamed of my roses.  I waited.  I watched.  I wondered.  When would my rose garden look like a garden?  There were glimpses of the glory to come.

And now, my main rose bed is finally beginning to look like my winter time dreams.  No more anticipation.  Blooms are beginning to open.  Companion plants are beginning to emerge and fill in.  Oh, how I've missed the beauty of this bed.  Winter is over - roses are blooming!

Come, sit in the garden with me and I will show you around.

I have a mixture of roses in this bed.  Some modern, some OGRs, climbers, even miniatures.  All, my loves.

I admire individual blooms as well as the contrast of colors in this bed.

Most of my companion plantings were added last year.  They are still filling in.

There is a range of colors in this bed, most in the apricot to rust shades.

As you can see, I love 'hot' colors.

Row after row of roses blooming makes my heart sing.

Orange, red, pink, blue.  Do these clash to you?

The sun is beginning to set.  Our tour is complete.

Thanks for coming by.  I hope you enjoyed it!

I'm linking this to Cottage Flora Thursdays.

  2. This is a great tour. You should advertise! Would love to have your garden on the tours I am working on. Not one rose garden on either tour so far. Fingers crossed though. I do have roses, but my garden is not on any tour and my roses are not as abundant as yours. Just lovely. Oh, I am still dreaming. Roses are a long time coming here.

  3. I personally don't think roses colors clash at all. They are all beautiful with their beautiful shades of color. You have some awesome rose gardens.

  6. Your photos are gorgeous, why don't you enlarge them?
Here in Italy it's quite early for roses, May is the month dedicated to them.
Have a wonderful day among your plants!

  7. Darla - Roses are great as a compliment to a garden. They have just become the star of mine! They were the first plant that could take our soil and live, so I ran with them!

GWGT - haha - my garden is always in a state of disarray! A tour would drive me over the edge mentally, I think! But I do hope you can find a rose garden for your tour. I think a lot of people are drawn to them, even if they don't grow them personally.

Becca - Thanks. The pink roses were an overthought - overgrown, so transplanted, from another area - so I've never really decided if they blend well or not with the other more peachy/orangey tones of the other roses. Thanks for commenting.

Masha - I had thought about naming them, but it got a little overwhelming. There's probably around 40 varieties of roses in this bed.

Cher - Thanks so much for your comment!

dona - I'm not sure I know how to get them much larger, without them being too large. Italy's weather must be generally milder and kinder than here, which is very hot!

  10. Hi there. Its very lovely. How many of these are everblooming or big rebloomers? I imagine if you have the right kinds it pretty much looks incredible all summer long. Unless you get bs. (the bane of my garden)

  11. I did really enjoy the tour, especially your enthusiasm for your roses.

  12. Donna - They are like old friends you love to see!

Cynthia - I'm impressed you started with Lady Banks! You will be thrilled when she blooms - she's so pretty. And being thornless helps, too!

Jess - Most of these bloom throughout the summer. And yes, I do get BS - usually in the fall, a little in the spring. But it's usually too hot for it all summer! It's worse for gardeners in cooler areas.

Carolyn - Glad you enjoyed it!

  13. Wish I was there! It looks simply lovely. And the bench is such a nice addition to the setting.

  14. I love a good many of my roses to a freak freeze last year so thank you for sharing yours. Mostly English roses as that is what grows so well here in the mountains of N. California. What I have left won't bloom until well into June. It never comes soon enough. I will share what I have though when the time comes.

  15. PlantPostings - I have rarely sat there in the past, but now that the roses have grown around it, I will be sitting there much more often!

  16. Pam- I'm so sorry you lost your roses! We can't control nature, and sometimes it's so heartbreaking.

  17. Roses are my favorite flowers, and yours are lovely. I mail ordered many of mine from a place in Texas you might be familiar with, The Antique Rose Emporium. In fact I have two I just received waiting in pots to be planted out in the garden. Thank you for sharing all of this beauty with us.

  18. Lovely roses. I enjoyed your tour. My one rose bush is looking very healthy but no buds yet. Still too early and too cool. Won't be long now.

  19. La Vie Quotidienne - Oh, yes, the Antique Rose Emporium is a great place. Good luck on you new 'babies'. Thanks for commenting.

Marcia - Looking healthy is the main thing. Last year we had a cool spring, this year we are earlier than usual.

  26. Dear HolleyG., Loved the tour of your beautiful garden! I am missing my summer blooms, and will be so happy when they return. P x

  27. Jeannie B - I plan to sit there a lot more this year! Of course, we gardeners always say we'll sit more, don't we? :)

Kelsey - It really does lift one's spirits to have the garden in full bloom! I have evergreens for winter, but it's just not the same.

Meghan - Yes, things bloomed early here, too. Which is nice - I was quite anxious for the garden to be full of color.

Tracie - I spray aphids with water if I notice them. This year I've noticed a lot of ladybugs, so hopefully they're doing their job!

Gabrielle - I initially only had roses in this bed, but now I'm filling in with companions, and they bring a lot of charm and contrast to the bed.

Kelli - Heat is right! Our temperatures are quite a bit above average. Last year was cooler than usual. We are probably a month ahead of last year!

Pam - It shouldn't be long for you, should it? Your garden probably has more of each season. Summer is our longest season, so my garden is geared for summer blooms.

  28. Thanks for the tour! I love the hot colors too - especially the reddish ones with the orange mixed in. We don't get roses blooming on Long Island until June, so thanks for letting me enjoy yours today!

  29. Kate - I'm certain yours will be glorious in June. Mine will go into a dormant period this summer when it get too hot - usually July or August. Until then, though, I'm going to enjoy them as much as I can! Thanks for commenting.

  30. Wonderful tour. You have some very pretty blooms. Love the mix of companion plants. Looks great. This is the best time of the year for me! I can see it is for you too!

  31. Redneck Rosarian - Yes, you're right. This time of the year is the time I look forward to all year. My garden is definitely a summer time garden!
